And don't forget to include your mailing address so I'll know where to send the package. I pack the books in protective puffy envelopes and mail them first class, which means from the time I get your check, you should have the book in your hands no more than a week-to-ten days later. |

About the Books
Charles Sovek's three original North Light Book titles are now being published under his own Back Porch Press imprint, along with the three additional titles described below. He altered only one of his three original North Light books by turning some of the color pages of OIL PAINTING: DEVELOP YOUR NATURAL ABILITY into black and white. Not being a mega enterprise, duplicating the splashy, full-color-throughout edition of OIL PAINTING: DEVELOP YOUR NATURAL ABILITY that North Light came out with was way beyond us. But what we can deliver is a reprint with every single word and picture intact in the same 8 1/2" x 11", 152 page format as the original book. The pages he chose for black and white in OIL PAINTING: DEVELOP YOUR NATURAL ABILITY are limited to those illustrated with paintings that occupy more decorative than functional positions. Those that are part of the teaching lessons maintain the same full color as the original North Light edition. We're especially pleased with the spiral binding, which stays flopped open at whatever page you’re working with. CATCHING LIGHT IN YOUR PAINTINGS, by contrast, retains every single color image that was reproduced in the original North Light edition.
Checking out Amazon.com, Charles saw used copies of his oil painting book going for $175 to $200. CATCHING LIGHT IN YOUR PAINTINGS is between $65 and $100 and PAINTING INDOORS goes for about $95. And we're talking about used books. Amazing! But if you really don’t like the book, and this is true with any of the books listed on this page, we’ll return your money, less shipping and handling (so long as you don’t send the book back with paint all over it).
THE BEST OF PAINTING INDOORS is a reprint of his first book, PAINTING INDOORS. To keep the price affordable, the format has been reduced from the 8 1/2" x 11" size of the hardcover original to a compact 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" spiral bound soft cover with 16 of the 64 pages in full color. The book is titled THE BEST OF... because he edited out a lot of unrelated material dealing with art supplies and photography that are both dated and better presented under a separate title. Note: This title is currently out-of-print.
KEYING YOUR PAINTINGS is a little 24-page volume expanded from an article Charles wrote for The Artist’s Magazine. The cost is $15.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
Inspired by his web page of the same name, THE BASICS is long overdue in print. For years now students have been downloading the lessons directly from the web site completely free of charge. This service will continue for anyone who chooses that option. For those who want a finer quality of reproduction than the 72 dots-per-inch web images - that really don't do justice to both clarity of image and ease in reading the text - can now have the lessons in book form. The volume has spiral binding running horizontally across the top for easy viewing while you're painting. The 8 1/2 x 11 inch, 44 page format is reproduced in full color throughout with additional material written especially for this new edition.
Charles' most recent book, A PAINTER'S TOUR DE FRANCE, is more a diary than how-to volume. It includes 40 full color paintings done over a 31 day lark across France. The color reproductions are superb. The text is brief yet informative and not without humor. The size is a vertical 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 with 36 pages spiral bound for easy viewing. Note: This title is currently out-of-print.
